Homemade Diwali Kandil's / Lanterns

It brings a broad SMILE and a sense of achievement to say " I MADE IT " when you make something on your own and that too from a scratch. I love DIY... What about you ?

The festival of lights "DEEPAWALI" or "DIWALI" is right around the corner. Everybody in our home loves this festival. It comes with loads of goodness and flavor in every form through variety food, new clothes, festive decor, fire crackers, and festive lights to brighten up the festive spirit more. Diwali is altogether a different joy when you celebrate it in India.

Yes, during Diwali we all polish our home till it shines, buy new clothes, gifts, prepare a variety of snacks and sweets, buy diya's to decorate and lit our home, blast crackers on the day of Diwali welcoming it aloud and much more with our Family and Friends. To make this Diwali more fun, after all festive preparations we decided to make homemade KANDIL's - lighted lanterns. Me, My husband and my little one helped me in this process...

THINGS WE NEED
- foam sheets of various colors OR any type of colored fancy paper OR shiny sheets
- scissors
- double sided tape OR duck tape
- fancy lace OR twine
- nails/hooks OR office pin to hang

PROCEDURE

Step 1 : I used A4 size foam sheets of various colors which i had at home.
Alternative material (you can use newspapers / any colored craft papers / soft foldable cardbaoards / colored plastic sheets whichever is locally and easily available to you , make sure whatever material you use it should be flexible to bend and cut and stuck easily )

Step 2 : Cut a rough format paper cut out like the size of foam sheets. Then make multiple folds to make marks as shown of the dark green paper cut out in the picture below.

Step 3 : Fold it in half from the broad side. Cut the marked folds with scissors leaving some space at the end.

Step 4 : Now the first foam sheet is cut and ready.

Step 5 : Open the cut foam sheet and hold it straight up joining it from both the open sides. Now apply a double sided tape on the open sides to overlap and stick it as shown below.

Step 6 : Repeat the above same steps to all the foam sheets. Now, the blue foam sheet below is also cut, stuck and ready.

Step 7 : Once all the Kandil are ready as shown. We planned to decorate it simple just by cutting some border shapes and stick it over the top and bottom borders. When it comes to decorating them, a variety of fancy stuff is available in the market nowadays and you may be fascinated and confused as to the choice it may offer, feel free to decorate and accessorize your homemade Kandil according to your likes and preferences.

Step 8 : Once all Kandil are decorated and ready, time to hang them. We used regular twine or thick thread, cut it into different sizes as we planned to hang them in uneven manner and used regular cello tape/duck tape to stick it. All Kandil are ready to be hung over the ceiling.
